Thanks to platform changes in the new versions of Windows, IT can begin treating even traditional PCs like mobile devices, giving users additional capabilities while maintaining control of corporate data. This “new normal” means that users can have a greater choice of devices, more flexibility to work when and where they want, and more modern communications options. And it should lead to a rethinking of the often-adversarial relationship that users have with IT, helping the organization move from reactive to proactive.
This whitepaper evaluates how the landscape for client computing has changed in this new era, while retaining all of the productivity benefits we’ve come to expect from the PC.
According to Forrester Research, "end-user experience has to be the benchmark for enterprise application performance," which of course makes perfect sense, given that enterprises are spending billions of dollars to enable productivity and automation gains as specifically directed by end-users.
Remote and roaming workers are constantly checking email, downloading data, and staying productive. Results are their top priority—security is not. IT organizations need to keep up with these high-performers to update their security software and scan their systems for viruses without reducing their productivity. This paper looks at the security challenges posed by employees working beyond the company's secure perimeter, and proposes a transition to a cloud-based security service.
Most vendors seem to assume that small businesses have the expertise and full-time staff of a large enterprise to manage IT security. Too often for small and mid-sized businesses, this one-size-fits-all approach results in higher costs, lower productivity and more risk. In this paper, we’ll examine the inherent complexity of enterprise-class security products and the very different needs of smaller organizations. Then we’ll look at a simpler alternative: cloud-based endpoint security.

The world economy has become service and project-driven. Global businesses have realized the new playing field is not based solely on competing with products and price, but rather through client-driven projects that require unique consulting knowledge, skills and experience. This project-driven service economy depends on accurately capturing knowledge-worker productivity—how much time, skill, materials and intellectual property are required to produce favorable client outcomes? New cloud-based Services Resource Planning (SRP) applications have emerged to manage the entire project lifecycle from requirements to quoting, time and expense capture and billing. SRP provides the systems basis for initiation, planning, resource management, execution, close and control of projects and services.

It should depend on what you’re protecting. What’s the cost of an hour of downtime to you, both in dollars and in value that doesn’t easily carry a price tag like productivity or reputation? Your answers should determine the level of protection you need.

Today, IT leaders address the PC lifecycle across a continuum from control to transformation. Control is geared to optimization, while transformation focuses on the business impact of technology. Though the two approaches differ, they are not in opposition. They strive for the same goals and face similar challenges. As IT leaders provide their workforce with the tools to carry out the corporate mission, they should develop a PC lifecycle strategy that encompasses the key organizational needs of systems management, end-user productivity, business innovation and data-centric security. Read this Dell whitepaper to learn more about the findings of a recent Forrester Consulting study, “Digital Transformers Innovate, Digital Controllers Optimize”. This paper will help clarify the PC lifecycle continuum, from the basics of control to the advanced levels of transformation, so you will be better equipped to determine the needs of your organization on that spectrum.
